Certified Physiotherapist
A vocational training course at the Institute of Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is used in almost all medical fields as an established therapeutic method. Physiotherapists support the development, reconstruction or maintenance of all physical functions.

1. Vocational training
This course begins on 1 October each year and takes three years. After the exam you will be a "Staatlich geprüfte/r Physiotherapist" (Certified Physiotherapist).

2. Entry requirements
- Fachoberschulreife (roughly equivalent to British GCSEs)
- At least 18 years of age
- Health certificate
3. Course content
Physiotherapists carry out treatment in almost all medical fields. They analyse and treat patients with posture and movement disorders or disorders of the internal organ system, for example the breathing or the cardiovascular system.

- Anatomy, Physiology, Diseases
- Physiotherapeutic Assessment and Treatment Techniques
- Biomechanics, Training and Movement
- Prevention and Rehabilitation
- Education, Psychology, Sociology
- Movement Education
- Hydrotherapy, Massagetherapy, Electrotherapy
- First Aid, Bandage / Dressing
- Work and Legal Regulations
Apart from providing students with the theoretical and practical fundamentals, there will be a work placement, starting in the second year, in the following clinical fields: Surgery, Orthopaedics, Inner Medicine, Neurology, Pediatry, Gynaecology and Psychiatry.

5. Further training certificates
To enhance their qualificational standard, students are offered the opportunity to obtain the following further training certificates:

SET (Sling Exercise Therapy)

Sling Exercise Therapy is a holistic concept for active treatment and training, which aims to bring long-term relief or even cure disorders in the muscular or the sceletal system. The concept is based on what today is generally considered to be fundamental in the areas of active training and active rehabilitation.

Pilates
Pilates is a method developed as early as in the 1920s by Joseph H Pilates. It is a system of stretching and strengthening exercises, based on the balance of body and souls, and aims at restoring natural and healthy movement. By concentrating on the major posture muscles, the torso gets more stable. Weakened muscles are strengthened, shortened muscles are stretched. Flowing movements are combined with the corresponding breathing activities.

6. Career opportunities
The number of different fields of practice gives Physiotherapists the chance to specialise according to their skills and interests. Job prospects are good, and qualified Physiotherapists are not likely to meet with any difficulties on the labour market.
Fields of practice are:
- Hospitals and clinics
- Physiotherapy practices
- Rehabilitation centres
- Sports clubs (preventative areas)
- Facilities for the disabled
- Child care facilities and children's homes
Physiotherapists who meet academic and personal requirements may move up to managing positions later in their professional life.

7. Cost
Tuition fees amount to € 435 per month. Occupational clothing, textbooks and other teaching material will have to be paid by the students.

8. Financial aid
The following aid schemes are possible:
- BAföG (= student loans/grants)
- Berufsgenossenschaft (= occupational association)
- Berufsförderungsdienst der Bundeswehr (armed forces)
